Shade, airflow, thermal mass and planting will do more for comfort in a hot country than any amount of air conditioning. The old builders knew it; the good new ones remember.
Designing With the Climate, Not Against It

Every hot country has a vernacular architecture that solved the heat long before mechanical cooling arrived, and almost all of them arrived at variations of the same four ideas: get the sun off the building, let the air move through it, use materials that hold their temperature, and plant generously around the whole thing. What changed in the twentieth century was not the physics but the availability of a machine that let designers ignore it.

Shade is the first and largest lever. A wall in direct tropical sun can be twenty degrees hotter than one in shadow, so a deep eave, a brise-soleil, a shaded verandah or a simple pergola of climbing plants pays back immediately. Orientation matters as much as the shading itself: the long sides of a building ideally face north and south, keeping the harsh low east and west sun off the largest expanses of glass.

Airflow is the second. Air moving across skin at even a gentle pace makes a room feel several degrees cooler than the thermometer says, which is why ceiling fans remain the most cost-effective comfort device ever invented. Designing for it means openings on opposite walls, internal doors and screens that can be left open, high ceilings, and ideally a vent or clerestory near the top of the room so hot air can escape rather than pooling.

Thermal mass is the third, and the most misunderstood. Heavy materials — stone, concrete, rammed earth, thick masonry — absorb heat slowly during the day and release it slowly at night, flattening out the peaks. In climates with a decent day-to-night temperature swing this is a gift. In the constantly humid tropics it needs care, because mass that never gets a chance to cool overnight simply becomes a storage heater; the answer is mass in the shaded, ventilated parts and lightweight construction elsewhere.

Planting is the fourth and the most undervalued. A mature tree on the sunny side of a house is an air conditioner that runs on rain. Vegetation shades surfaces, cools the air passing over it through transpiration, cuts glare, absorbs noise and keeps the ground around a building from turning into a heat sink. Hard paving does the opposite, which is why a courtyard of gravel and planting feels so different from the same space in concrete.

Water is the traditional fifth element in this toolkit and still works. A pond, channel or pool positioned upwind of a living space cools the breeze crossing it; a courtyard with water at its centre sets up gentle convection through the surrounding rooms. It is no accident that so much historic architecture in hot regions, from Andalusia to Rajasthan to Java, is organised around a body of water.

Put the four together and the mechanical system becomes a backup rather than the whole strategy. That is the real prize: not a house with no air conditioning, which is a purist's position most people will not keep, but a house that is comfortable without it for most of the year and only calls on it during the worst weeks. The running costs and the carbon follow directly from that.

The wider point is that this is not a specialist or an expensive way to build. Orientation is free. An overhang is cheap. Cross-ventilation is a floor plan decision. A tree costs almost nothing and improves for fifty years. The gap between a house that fights its climate and one that works with it is mostly a gap in intention, decided long before anyone chooses a tile.
